How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes (Even If You Don't Have It)

The day that actress, comedian, and cohost of The View Sherri Shepherd was diagnosed with the Big D—type 2 diabetes—she didn't see it coming. But she should have. Sherri had spent years battling excess weight, ignoring the warning that she was prediabetic, avoiding doctors, and denying some very clear signs that a diabetes diagnosis was imminent. Even watching the disease take her mother's life at the age of forty-one didn't sound the alarm for Sherri. But when D Day came, she had a diagnosis in hand and a child of her own. Sherri knew she needed to take a cold, hard look at the way she was living and make a choice: she could completely overhaul her life and reevaluate her relationship to food and exercise, or continue on a path that could leave her son growing up without his mother. The choice was easy. Putting the choice into action was a little more difficult.

If you're one of the 100 million Americans diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes each year, or one of the 130 million people who are overweight and at risk but don't know where to start, Plan D can provide life- changing results. Here, Sherri Shepherd breaks down the basics of the science of diabetes, explains how reversing your insulin resistance (the cause of type 2 diabetes) is the key, and offers support, humor, and the action plan you need to get results. With this medically supported plan, Sherri was able to lose forty pounds and keep it off. Through three key simple but effective strategies centered on diet, exercise, and taking control of the emotions that lead to poor food choices, Sherri offers readers a way to lose weight and control diabetes without feeling deprived, or chained to a strict, lifeless way of living. Plan D is flexible, sensible, and straight-forward, and it works wherever you are on the spectrum—whether you're struggling to lose weight, are in the danger zone of prediabetes and looking to turn things around, or have already been diagnosed with diabetes.

Plan D will give you the facts you need to start changing your habits and your health now. With the help of her doctor, a leading endocrinologist, and a support group of family and close friends, Sherri changed her life. With Plan D, you can too.Click Here To Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes

Now, in IT'S ALL GOOD, she shares the go-to dishes that have become the baseline for the restorative diet she turns to whenever she feels she needs it. Dr. Ian K. Smith's Shred is the answer to every dieter's biggest dilemmas: how to lose that last twenty pounds? How to push through that frustrating plateau? What to do when nothing else is working? Here, Smith has created a weight loss program that uses all he knows about strategic dieting in one plan--like putting all the best players on the field at once to create a can't lose combination. No matter how often or how unsuccessfully you've dieted before, Shred: The Revolutionary Diet will change your life. Shred has taken the internet by storm, and thousands have already joined Dr. Ian's Shredder Nation, losing an average of four inches, two sizes or twenty pounds in six weeks. Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health

A renowned cardiologist explains how eliminating wheat from our diets can prevent fat storage, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse myriad health problems.

Every day, over 200 million Americans consume food products made of wheat. As a result, over 100 million of them experience some form of adverse health effect, ranging from minor rashes and high blood sugar to the unattractive stomach bulges that preventive cardiologist William Davis calls “wheat bellies.” According to Davis, that excess fat has nothing to do with gluttony, sloth, or too much butter: It’s due to the whole grain wraps we eat for lunch.

After witnessing over 2,000 patients regain their health after giving up wheat, Davis reached the disturbing conclusion that wheat is the single largest contributor to the nationwide obesity epidemic—and its elimination is key to dramatic weight loss and optimal health.

In Wheat Belly, Davis exposes the harmful effects of what is actually a product of genetic tinkering and agribusiness being sold to the American public as “wheat”—and provides readers with a user-friendly, step-by-step plan to navigate a new, wheat-free lifestyle. Informed by cutting-edge science and nutrition, along with case studies from men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in their health after waving goodbye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at what is truly making Americans sick and an action plan to clear our plates of this seemingly benign ingredient.

Drop 7 Foods, Lose 7 Pounds, Just 7 Days

Leslie was at the end of her rope. She'd been to every doctor in the Los Angeles area, and nobody could help her. As it happens, her stepmother is Suzanne Somers, an expert in health, beauty and fitness. Suzanne knows all the gurus, besides being one herself. But none of them could fix Leslie's problem. Leslie was 40 pounds overweight. It didn't seem to matter whether she ate or not. She had this chronic bloating thing going on—in fact, she got more and more bloated as the day continued, no matter how little she ate.

I loved Leslie on the spot. She's adorable. And I was struck by how much she was already doing the right things—and how little any of them were helping her.

"What's going on, JJ?" Leslie asked me. At this point, she was beyond frustrated. "You've got to help me out, because nobody else has ever been able to."

I felt a lot of sympathy for Leslie, who was working so hard to lose weight—and with so little result. She exercised and was very careful about counting calories and controlling portions. But as I tell all of my clients, your body isn't a savings bank or a calorimeter. It's a chemistry lab. Counting calories and measuring portions just isn't enough. You have to know how your body is responding to the foods you eat. And Leslie's body was telling her that she wasn't eating right.

I suspected that Leslie's problems stemmed from food intolerance. She had been eating a high-FI diet for years, including all the supposedly healthy choices: eggs, tofu, whole-grain bread, whey protein shakes. She lived on diet sodas and cafe lattes with skim milk. Sometimes she'd treat herself to some corn chips and salsa. That made at least 6 of the 7 high-FI foods right there: eggs, soy, gluten, dairy, artificial sweeteners and corn. All she was missing was sugar and peanuts, and when she occasionally ate desserts or processed foods (which are often made with peanut oil), she was consuming those, too.

"Look," I told Leslie, as gently as I could, "you can be doing all the right things—exercise, careful eating, the works—but if you've built up a food intolerance or messed up your digestive tract, even the right things can't help you. Right now, your immune system is on high alert, and it's overreacting to many of the foods you eat. Until we get your immune system to chill out, you won't be able to lose weight."

Food intolerance is one of the most frustrating conditions I know. All of a sudden, you can't lose those extra pounds, even when you are eating and exercising exactly as you always have. Sometimes you might even be eating less and exercising more—and you still gain weight! How unfair is that?

The best way to get Leslie's immune system back on track was to cut out all 7 high-FI foods and increase her intake of low-FI foods. Once her immune system wasn't jumping into hyperalert and flooding her system with inflammatory chemicals, her digestive system would have a chance to heal. I also suggested my special Virgin Diet Shakes as a source of protein. Along with the healing foods and healing supplements I recommend, the Virgin Diet Shakes would help reverse inflammation, reducing all those "protective" chemicals that were causing Leslie's body to gain weight, aging her skin and hair and sapping her energy. In 7 days, I promised Leslie she would lose the bloat and look years younger. The Virgin Diet was the key.

In fact, that's exactly what happened. When I saw Leslie a few weeks later, she was so excited that her words kept tumbling over each other. "I've lost more than 10 pounds already, and I feel so hopeful about the other 30! Look at my skin. It hasn't looked this good in years! My friends keep asking if I was away on vacation. At work, they know I wasn't, so they've started a rumor about me having a new boyfriend. I can't believe how good I feel!"

I was so happy for my client because she had finally stopped accepting the weight gain, exhaustion and premature aging that she had come to believe was her lot in life. Instead, she was losing weight, feeling great and looking 10 years younger. Terrific was now her new normal. It can also be yours.

STOP COUNTING CALORIES

So, what's the first thing I'd like you to do on the Virgin Diet? I hope you're sitting down because my first piece of advice might shock you: stop counting calories.

That's right, I'm suggesting that you stop counting calories because your body is not a savings bank or a calorimeter. It's a chemistry lab. Although the total number of calories counts, it is only part of the story. The source of the calories matters far more. If your calories come from foods that are causing your body trouble, then it almost doesn't matter how much or how little you eat. Even moderate intake of problem foods sets up your body for weight gain. And as we've seen, those problem foods are not just cookies, cake and full-sugar soda. They include artificial sweeteners and diet sodas, low-fat yogurt, eggs, soy and whole grains.

NO MORE MODERATION

Now here's the key to the Virgin Diet: when it comes to weight loss and healthy eating, moderation doesn't work.

Why? Because weight gain among the nonobese is generally gradual, averaging almost a pound a year as the result of only moderate changes in diet and activity. Yes, if you binge for months on potato chips and ice cream, you're going to put on weight quickly. But that's not how most people gain weight. They continue eating their normal diet, with maybe just a tablespoon of butter here or a few extra cookies there. Before they know it, they've gained a pound a year, which adds up to 10 pounds in 10 years and 20 pounds in 20 years. It looks like age itself is the problem, but it's not. It's that pound a year that caused all the trouble.

In other words, the average 30-year-old who consumes a moderate caloric diet while eating the wrong foods will be 10 pounds heavier by age 40 for what may seem like no reason at all. And if at any point along the way that person tries to lose weight—usually by restricting calories—she's going to find it very difficult to lose weight, keep it off or both.

Why? Because, you guessed it, your body is not a bank account or a calorimeter. It is a chemistry lab. Eating the wrong foods affects your body's chemistry. Gaining weight affects your body's chemistry. Stress and lifestyle changes affect your body's chemistry. So, if you want to get that extra weight off, you have to heal your body's chemistry.

FOOD IS INFORMATION

Okay, so here's how I like to think of it: food isn't just calories or fat grams or even a source of energy, food is information. Each bite of food that you put into your mouth sends your body a message—maybe even several messages.

Some of these messages relate to your blood sugar and insulin production. Some of them govern your feelings of hunger and fullness. Others concern your fat burning and metabolism, and still others involve your hair, skin, mood and mental functioning.

This is why I say that not all calories are created equal. You might portion out a cookie, a hamburger and a serving of cauliflower so they all have the same number of calories, but each of those three foods is going to send your body very different messages. And it's the messages we care about, not just the calories.

Actually, it's not just what you eat that gives your body information. It's also how much you eat at one time, how fast you eat, what combinations you eat, how you feel while you are eating and even what you drink with what you eat. Every one of those things is important because each sends your body a message: burn fat or store it; build muscle or lose it; slow the aging process down or speed it up; create steady, sustained energy or crash and burn within the next couple hours. Don't worry if this sounds complicated: I have laid it all out for you. All you have to do is live by the Virgin Diet Plate and follow my rules of meal timing, and you will be golden. The Virgin Diet is designed to send only the right messages to your body—24/7 for 21 days. I'm betting that you'll like the feeling so much that you'll keep sending all the right messages for a long, long time after that.

FOOD ALLERGIES: RARE BUT DANGEROUS

Food allergies are actually rather rare, but they get all the bad press because they are responsible for the really dramatic food problems that we hear about, such as the child who takes one bite of a peanut and then has to be rushed to the hospital. Food allergies trigger special antibodies in the bloodstream known as immunoglobulin E, or IgE, the most aggressive defense system our bodies have. Among other chemicals, IgE antibodies release large amounts of histamine, a substance that causes swelling, mucus, congestion and all the other symptoms that you would normally modify with an antihistamine.

It's the swelling reaction that makes food allergies so dangerous. In severe cases, the throat and airways become so swollen that they cut off the air supply, making you unable to breathe.

Even without such deadly responses, however, aggressive IgE antibodies generally produce quick, dramatic reactions, appearing within minutes or even seconds after the offending food is consumed. Other allergic reactions include rashes, hives, itching, eczema, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, shortness of breath and chest pain, as well as bloating, nausea, cramping and stomachache. Because much of our immune system is located in the gut, food allergies tend to wreak havoc with digestion.

Now, at this point, you might be thinking, But I don't have any of those symptoms, and I feel fine after I eat. If that's your response, terrific! You probably don't have any food allergies. Most ...

2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever

Devised by Dr. Pierre Dukan, a French medical doctor who has spent his career helping people to lose weight, the Dukan Diet rejects counting calories and promises permanent weight loss while allowing adherents to eat as much as they like.

Originally published in 2000, the Dukan Diet swept across France, championed by people who successfully lost weight following its unique four phase regime. The Dukan Diet has helped millions in France, where it has been number one for more than ten years and adopted in twenty countries, including the United Kingdom, Poland, Korea and Brazil. All together, The Dukan Diet has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide.

The Diet: 4 Easy Steps to Permanent Weight Loss

Phase one: Attack
Using Dr. Dukan's True Weight calculator, dieters determine a reasonable and healthy weight loss goal. Then they begin the Dukan Attack phase a two-to-seven-day period during which only unlimited lean protein and a daily Oat bran galette (or pancake) are consumed and dramatic weight loss is achieved.

Phase Two: Cruise
Dieters alternate days of unlimited lean protein with days of protein combined with healthful vegetables until they reach their True Weight.

Phase Three: Consolidation
Dieters stay on this phase for 5 days for every pound lost. At this point the diet allows unlimited protein and vegetables, and other foods (such as cheese and bread) are reintroduced.  Dieters are also allowed two weekly celebration meals to stave off boredom.

Phase Four: Stabilization
This is the maintenance portion of the plan, in which followers are allowed to eat whatever they like without regaining weight--provided that they follow 3 unbreakable rules including eating only unlimited lean protein one set day per week.

For each phase, The Dukan Diet offers clear simple guidelines for long term success.  The Dukan Diet is the perfect diet for people who want fast weight loss, that can be maintained without counting calories or weighing portions.

7 Yoga Positions to Tone Your Butt

Have you ever wanted to know a few yoga positions to tone your butt? The bum is one of the hardest areas to get in shape. Running is great and pilates can do wonders for your abs, but yoga is my go-to for the bum. These yoga positions to tone your butt can be added to your favorite sequence, or made into a bum-tastic yoga routine… Be prepared to feel the burn!

1. Chair Pose
Chair pose uses your core muscles along with the inner and outer thighs, glutes, and the back. This position is one of my fave yoga positions to tone your butt because it works the whole back region. If you want to add a little extra to this pose, try the twisting chair pose, or hold for a longer amount of time. One minute of chair pose mixed in with your usual yoga routine is sure to give you glutes of steel!

2. Triangle Pose
Triangle pose focuses on keeping your body straight and hips in line with back. This is great if you are wanting to work your upper bum and get a little extra stretching in as well. The combination of stretching and muscle building ensures that our muscles won’t bulk up. The pose also has a few variations for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced yogis out there.

3. Warrior Three
Get ready to feel this pose everywhere! Warrior Three is asking you to, pretty much, form your body into a “T” with your arms, torso, and leg parallel to the floor. This works your shoulders, arms, chest, abs, and your bum most of all. If you have a hard time with balance, you may prefer to start with arms at your side instead of straight out, or be close to something you can grab in case things get wobbly.

4. Dancing Shiva
Don’t you just love that name? Me too! The god Shiva is portrayed with one bent leg supporting him and one bent leg in the air. He has multiple arms and they are going every which way. This pose will work the muscles of the supporting leg and the raised leg like madness. It is also great for the triceps and the trapezius muscles!

5. Goddess Pose
We are keeping all our gods and goddesses in a row. This pose is a little like a second position plie, but your legs should be a bit wider and you do not come back up for quite some time. Staying in goddess pose for a minute or more will definitely get your muscles burning and leave you feeling like quite the accomplished lady. Channel your inner goddess and ignore the urge to stand up. Your new, gravity defying bum will thank you in the end.

6. Warrior Two
This is my absolute favorite yoga position. I fell in love with yoga by doing a Yogamazing warrior sequence and now have Warrior Two in every flow I do. No matter how often I do this pose, I always feel it in those tiny, hard to reach muscles the next day. This pose is great for all three glute muscles, arms, shoulders, and those ilio and abductor muscles of the leg. Do this pose in your next sequence and the results could make it your favorite too!

7. Bridge Pose?
Oh Bridge pose, such a wonderful way to relax while burning fat. This pose is not quite as intense as Goddess or Warrior Three, but it will work your upper bum all the same. If you would like to increase the burn of this position, try lowering your body so you are almost touching the ground, then rising back up. You can also raise one leg straight up for some extra burntastic results. Any way you do it, this pose is guaranteed to help your rear defy that pesky gravity!

Yoga is so fantastic for legs, it keeps them lean and toned without having bulky muscles or extra jiggle. My favorite yoga routines include at least five of these poses after a nice jog. What are some of your fave ways to do yoga?

30 Ways to Get Great Abs if You Are a Girl

Getting great abs isn’t gender specific anymore. Once upon a time, it seemed like men were the only ones working to get rock hard abs, but head to any gym and you’ll see that there are just as many women interested in learning how to get great abs. The problem is that we girls seem to have a difficult time sculpting our midsections… but we still want fab abs! Generally, women must work much harder and longer to achieve the washboard abs we’ve have been dreaming of, but it’s not impossible! You just have to know the right moves, and a few diet tips, to get great abs, even if you’re a girl, like me. I can help! Here are dozens of ways to get great abs if you are a girl…

1. Bust The Myth

You’ve seen the ads all over the internet: bust belly fat fast! Well, guess what? Those ads are only helping spread a myth. There is NO way to get rid of fat in one area of your body. The only way to get rid of fat, and get great abs, is to lose weight all over, and tone the muscles in that entire core area. Now that the “lose belly fat” myth is busted, let’s move on and get great abs!

2. Skip The Soda

Before you do a single tummy crunch, think about what you’re putting into your body. A bottle of soda, which is two servings (not one!), contains almost 250 calories. Those are EMPTY calories, so skip the soda in favor of better hydration, like mixed fruit juice with no sugar added, or water with a squeeze of lemon.

3. Forget Fast Food

Here’s another diet tip that will help you get great abs: forget fast food! It’s loaded with calories, many of them from fat. In fact, one value meal can contain all of the calories you’re supposed to eat in one day! Forget fast food. Prepare your own meals at home.

4. Try for Five

Did you know you’re supposed to eat five servings of fresh fruits and veggies every day? Most of us don’t! If you try for five servings each day, you’ll notice you have more energy, and that you won’t be hungry… hey, five servings is a lot of food!

5. Don’t Starve Yourself

Don’t think that by cutting calories to the extreme you’ll lose belly fat and sculpt your abs. to build lean muscle, you’ll need protein, and carbs. Don’t starve yourself, or you’ll end up the flabbiest skinny girl on earth, or worse. Don’t’ even skip breakfast! Don’t skip any meals!

6. Fiber Supreme

Did you know that making the simple switch from chemical-filled (and notoriously bland) white bread to fiber-rich, tasty whole grain bread can help you feel fuller, longer, thus giving you the extra push you need to work out, and get great abs? It’s true. All true.

7. Know Your Serving Sizes

Okay, this is the last diet tip, then we’ll move on to exercises that will help you get great abs! Remember when I said that a bottle of soda is actually two servings, not one? Most of us don’t know what an actual serving size is. Check package labels carefully, and learn that a serving size looks like, so when you’re counting calories, you’re including everything you eat.

8. Practice The Inverted Bicycle

You might remember this little exercise from elementary P.E. class. Lie on your back with your hands behind your head and spin those legs like you are riding your bicycle. Always remember to breathe throughout your exercise time and pace yourself. To step it up, gently lift your head and crunch in as you “pedal.” Try for 3 sets of 3 minutes apiece.

9. Do Crunches Using An Exercise Ball

Crunches are a great way to shape up your abs. Sit on your exercise ball resting your lower back on the ball and placing your feet on the floor and place hands behind your head. Do crunches up and back while keeping your lower back on the ball. Why are these crunches better for getting great abs? Because, to stay on the ball, you’ll have to use your core for balance, kicking your crunches up a notch.

10. Try Some Old-school Sit-ups

Sit-ups work the core of your body and they don’t require any equipment. For the best results, do fast paced sets and keep your form sharp. Focus on correct breathing and contracting your abs with each movement. Try for 3 sets of 12 or 15.

11. Plank It!

Lie face down and rest on your forearms. Push your body off of the floor resting your body weight on your elbows and toes. Keep your back in a straight line with your head and toes. Tilt your pelvis and then hold for about 20 seconds. Lower back to floor and then repeat several times. See how long you can hold the plank position without bending! Whew!

12. Try Sit-DOWNS, Too

What’s the just-as-effective opposite of a sit-up? How about a sit DOWN! Sit on a decline bench with your feet tucked under the bar at the “up” end of the bench. Sit up, with your hands behind your head, and lay half-way back… don’t lay all the way back! Then slowly sit all the way up again. Repeat for 3 sets of 12… and remember to contract your abs all the way down and up!

13. Reverse Fly

Use a stand-up machine with a waist-high bar. Keeping your knees straight, bend at the waist, then “fly” back up. Don’t over-extend, just keep your line straight as you come up. Repeat for 3 sets of 12. It doesn’t sound like much, but this is great for your core!

14. Twist (shouting Is Optional)

Remember these calisthenics? They were also called windmills, I think. Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart, then bend at the waist and touch your left fingers to your right toes. Come back up, then touch your right fingers to your left toes. Whee! It’s so much fun, you’ll forget you’re working your abs and core. Repeat for 3 sets of 12.

15. Crunch Time

Ah, the dreaded crunches. They’re not very much fun, but they’re necessary if you want great abs. Some gyms offer crunch machines, so you can try those if you’d like. Or, if you prefer, you can use a decline bench. Either way, remember to crunch with your tummy, not with your head or neck. Aim for 3 sets of 12.

16. Crunch And Twist

Sounds like a snack, doesn’t it? Try these in addition to a typical crunch, by simple twisting slightly so your left elbow touches your right knee, then your right elbow touches your left knee. Again, repeat for 3 sets of 12.

17. Leg Raises

How can raising your legs help tone your tummy? Trust me, it works. Sit on a flat bench with your arms behind you for support, then raise your legs (bend your knees on the way up) to tummy-level. Squeeze your abs, then slowly lower your legs. Don’t let your feet touch the floor! Repeat for 3 sets of 20. Whew! See? Feel the burn!

 18. Walk It

If you’re just not up to running or jogging, did you know that walking (fast walking, that is) can be just as effective at helping you tone? Make sure you’re going fast-paced enough to make your heart thump, and to break a sweat. Here’s a good rule of thumb to tell if you’re walking fast enough: if you can sing along to your iPod, you need to speed up a bit!

19. Climb The Stairs

Whether you opt for the stairs instead of the elevator or use the torturous stair-climber at the gym, climbing the stairs in another way to get great abs. Why? Again, it’s all about the balance and cardio and weight-bearing exercise. It’s also good for your buns and thighs!

20. Spin It!

If you’ve ever taken a spin class then you already know how marvelous it is at toning your entire body. If you haven’t taken a spin class, what are you waiting for? It’s a wonderful way to get great abs!

21. Take Another Class!

Most gyms have one goal in mind: to help you get healthy and fit, and stay that way. So most of them offer group classes, from spinning (see above) to yoga to Zumba. Find a class that interests you, and sign up! When you’re rocking a bikini-ready bod, including great abs, you’ll be glad you did.

22. Yoga, Too!

That’s right, yoga is another excellent way to get great abs! It’s not all about the Tree or Downward Dog. Most moves help strengthen your core, which in turn is great for your abs. Try a DVD, or take one of those classes I mentioned above.

23. Don’t Forget The Cardio!

By getting good, heart-thumping cardio 4 times a week, for about forty minutes each session, you’ll tone your abs (along with everything else) and be heart-healthy and fit! Good examples of cardio are running, jogging, elliptical, and swimming.

24. Snack Well

For me, the hardest part of sticking to a plan that will help me get great abs is the snacking. I am ALWAYS hungry, so I keep a few healthy snacks in my work bag so I’m prepared when the urge to nosh strikes.

25. Squeezy Does It

No matter how you’re working out — cardio or jogging or yoga or whatever — be sure to keep your abs tight. This ensures you’ll be getting the maximum ab workout, and even help you keep proper form.

26. Straighten up!

Poor posture won’t help you get great abs, or anything else, for that matter. In fact, if you tighten your tummy muscles, you’ll notice that you’ll automatically sit up a little straighter. There! That’s better!

27. Dress The Part

Even if you have the greatest, most sculpted abs on the planet, wearing too-tight jeans will give you the illusion of muffin top, so imagine what even a tin pudge will look like! Wear jeans that flatter your body, rather than super-skinny jeans that are a size too small. Wouldn’t you rather look hot in a 6 than look bulgy in a 4?

28. Track Your Progress

Take a before photo of your tummy region before you start working on your abs, then every two weeks, take another. You’ll be able to track your “great abs” progress much better this way than by just weighing yourself on a scale.

29. Stay Inspired

Keep a photo of that bikini you want on the fridge to deter late-night snacking, or (sometimes more effective) a less-than-flattering photo of you in your gym bag when you’re feeling less-than-motivated. Or check out our list of motivational quotes for working out… anything that gets you, and keeps you, inspired!

29. Be Realistic

No matter how dedicated you are to your great-abs routine and diet, you won’t get your washboard belly in a week. Or even a month. It takes time, so be patient, and be realistic.

30. Hire a Pro

If all else fails, why not hire a pro? Personal trainers can help you in ways reading a list can’t. I mean, have you ever seen Jillian Michaels NOT get someone fit? Tell your potential trainer you want to tone up, including your abs, and ask for a trial workout before you make a hiring decision.

8 Ways to Stop Overeating

Weight loss doesn’t have to be complicated; for some of us, it’s just a matter of finding ways to stop overeating. I work out regularly, and I follow a healthy diet, but overeating is what causes me to gain weight, especially around the holidays. If you have the same issue, I can help! I’ve managed to overcome my overeating tendency by following a few simple tips. Here are 8 ways to stop overeating.

1. Count All The Calories!
Some of us aren’t even aware when we’re overeating! I know that sounds silly, but if you’re not counting all of the calories you’re consuming, you’re much more likely to accidentally overeat. One of the best ways to stop overeating is to count the calories in everything that goes into your mouth, including your fancy coffee drinks and even the condiments and dressings on your food. Count all the calories!

2. Eat More Often
Wait, what? Yes, I’m serious! Eating five small meals a day, rather than three big meals, will also keep you from overeating. How? Eating more often will keep you from feeling hungry, and if you’re not hungry, you’ll be a lot less likely to cheat on your diet by binging at your next meal.

3. Use a Bowl
Junk-food snacks come in big bags for a reason: to keep us munching more than we should, so we’ll buy more! If you’re a snack-time overeater (me? Guilty!), pour one serving into a bowl, and eat that, rather than eating snacks right out of the bag. You’ll be surprised how much longer that bag of crisps or Raisinettes lasts!

4. Use Smaller Plates
It’s a mind thing: if you have a big plate, you’ll want to fill it with food. So prevent overeating by simply using smaller plates, which will fool your brain into being satisfied with smaller food portions. I’m serious! Try it!

5. Portion Ahead of Time
Sometimes, even when we’ve poured one serving of food into a bowl or onto a plate, we want more, so we’ll just take more. This is a lot harder when we’ve already separated perfect portions into baggies or bowls we can just take and go. Spend the time to set up portions, rather than even keeping a large bag or bowl of something around to tempt you.

6. Eat at Home
Did you know that most chain restaurants serve two and a half servings on one plate, as one meal? It’s crazy! To avoid overeating, you can either dine at home, or simply ask for half of your meal to be boxed for carry-out before it even arrives at your table. Bingo! Lunch for tomorrow!

7. Brush after Eating
I’m a night-time snacker, so to avoid overeating when I ought to be winding down, I brush my teeth after dinner, or before I sit down to read or watch TV. That handful of Doritos doesn’t sound as appealing once my mouth is all minty! And all this brushing makes my dentist happy, too.

8. Keep a Food Journal
Once I started keeping a food journal, I was appalled at how much I ate – so to save myself a load of shame, I could either stop keeping the food journal, or stop overeating! Believe me, writing down everything you eat will force you to make much more careful choices. Who wants to look back at day after day of cheesecake cheats and Moosetracks mishaps?

I know some of these tips might sound a little silly, but they’re all effective… I know, because they’ve all worked for me! I found the food journal and the ahead-of-time portion planning to be the most effective for me, but which of these ideas do you think will work best for you? Or do you have another tip to share? Do tell!

8 Tips for Boosting Weight Loss

Whether you want to jump-start a long weight-loss journey, or you just want to lose ten pounds before your cousin’s wedding this summer, I have a list of tips for boosting weight loss that can help. Even if you’re a veteran in the weight loss arena, some of these tips for boosting weight loss might be new, so keep reading! Put down that Oreo, grab your smart phone, and let’s go!

1. Start Now!
It’s so much easier to lose weight when you’re young, and your metabolism is naturally faster, so the first of my tips for boosting weight loss is to start now, right now! Why wait? The longer you wait, the harder it will be, trust me.

2. Download An App
If you’re already using the fabulously helpful AWS app, great! If not, download it for free to take all of our weight loss tips with you no matter where you go. There are also loads of other helpful weight loss and dieting apps, so try a few of those, too… may I recommend a calorie-counting or food journal app?

3. Keep Inspired
It’s hard to accomplish any goal without keeping in mind why you’re bothering in the first place, so try your best to keep motivated. I keep a not-so-svelte photo of myself stuck to the fridge to discourage my late-night snacking habit, and an inspirational quote as my cell phone background… and a picture of the swimsuit I want to buy this summer in my day planner. What will work to remind you of your inspiration?

4. Add to Your Workout

If you’re not working out, start. If you are working out, add a little to boost your weight loss. What do I mean by “add”? On the elliptical, add ten minutes and a little incline. On the weights, add five or ten pounds. On your morning run, add a half-mile.

5. Count All The Calories!
Maybe you’ve never counted all your calories, or maybe you’ve just gotten a little lazy with your calorie counting. Either way, it’s important to count all of the calories you consume, including those in your fancy coffee drinks and even the ketchup on your scrambled eggs. By counting these calories, too, you might find that you’re consuming 500 more calories per day than you thought, slowing your weight loss… yikes!

6. Phone a Friend
Almost any endeavor, including weight loss, is easier with a friend, so why not find a diet buddy and a workout buddy? You can encourage each other, share recipes, maybe even spark a little friendly competition to keep you both motivated.

7. Try for Five
If you’re having trouble losing weight, you might not be eating often enough. Yes, that’s right: studies have shown that eating five small meals a day, rather than three big ones, can help you lose weight and keep it off. Eating more often will keep you from feeling hungry, which makes you a lot less likely to cheat on your diet… and eating more often also keeps your metabolism working in high gear. A double bonus!

8. Fill up on Fiber

Don’t believe the no-carbs myth – fiber, the dieter’s best friend, is a carb! If you’re trying to lose weight, fill up on fiber. It’ll help your body digest your food, and it will keep you feeling fuller, and more energized, longer. Add whole grains to your diet, and you’ll notice a difference right away!

Losing weight and keeping it off isn’t always easy, but it’s so worth the effort, and these tips will help, I promise… they’ve worked for me! I’m especially careful to get fiber and to keep motivated, but which of these ideas do you think will work best for you? Or do you have another tip to share?

10 iPhone Apps to Help You Lose Weight

One of my favorite things about my phone is the abundance of iPhone apps to help you lose weight. I have needed to lose weight for a very long time, but I am possibly the least motivated person you will ever meet. I talk myself out of going to the gym because I’m “too tired.” I start diets then cheat “only this time” which turns into all the time. But since combining several iPhone apps to help you lose weight, I have lost almost 35 pounds in the past few months. Here are 10 of the most helpful and motivational apps that will get you up and moving!

1. Couch to 5K
Price: $1.99
I am not, and never will be, a runner, so I do not use this app, but I know a couple of people who do and they swear that it is one of the best iPhone apps to help you lose weight. You turn on the app and put your headphones on when you leave your house for your run and let the training begin! This app not only keeps track of how far and how often you run, it tells you precisely how far you need to run every day. It talks to you as you run, telling you when to walk, when to jog and when to take a break. It also gives you vocal encouragement to help you keep going! If your goal is to get in better shape through running, this app comes highly recommended!

2. GymPact
Price: Free
If you need monetary motivation, and I assure you I certainly do, this app will give you all you need. It will also cost you if you don’t keep your promise to go to the gym, which may actually be even better motivation. Once you download the app, you go to your gym and check in so that the device knows your gym’s GPS location. You then choose how many days you are going to workout and state how much you will pay when you fail to meet your own requirements. Along with the negative repercussions (losing money) when you fail to exercise, you also get a nice reward if you accomplish your goals all week. The money paid by the people who failed to go to the gym gets used to pay you when you stick to your word!

3. SparkPeople
Price: Free/$3.99 (look for promo codes)
I use this one all day, every day. I found this app as an alternative to Weight Watchers because I was tired of paying a monthly fee. This app and service is 100% free! You fill in your data such as height, weight and age as well as what your personal goal weight and goal date are and the app tells you how much you need to lose per week and calculates how many calories per day you should eat. You then track your food through their quite extensive food databank, or by scanning the barcode on your food packages; you also track your exercise throughout the day. The app keeps track of everything for you and gives you charts and graphs to keep you informed. SparkPeople also offers support from other users as well as challenges you can sign yourself up for and track daily, such as “Drink 8 glasses of water every day for 1 month.” This app provides you recipes and meal plans that you can alter depending on your food preferences. It is amazing, I insist you try it out, you’ll love it!

4. Zombies, Run!
Price: $7.99
Personally, I get tired of boring exercises which is part of my motivation issue. I have no desire to do bland, uninteresting workouts. Zombies, Run! is perhaps the most compelling workout plan ever invented and I’m a total zombie movie freak so this is right up my alley! Plug in your headphones and start the app, you will hear hoards of moaning, groaning zombies running towards you seeking juicy brains! The only way to escape is to RUN! There are several levels which allow for walkers (like me!) or long-time runners. There are different modes which either force you to run faster and faster to avoid the un-dead mob, or go at your own pace, it is a totally personalized, fully-immersive exercising strategy that feels like a game. As you walk or run you will automatically “pick up” different objects and points. When you get home you can log on to the website and build up your home-base. Make sure to make it secure so the zombies don’t invade. You can even use this app while running on a treadmill. The price may seem steep for an app but it is money well spent if it will get you moving!

5. Yoga Studio
Price: $2.99
This is another one of the iPhone apps to help you lose weight that I use. I am a newbie to yoga and this app is perfect for me but it also has advanced modes for those of you who may be more experienced. You choose your difficulty level and what you are aiming for, be it weight loss, relaxation, flexibility or a variety of other goals. You can thumb through the different poses and choose the ones that look right for you (or they can suggest some if you don’t know what you’re doing). You use the settings to create a “class” for yourself. You then set a time that you would like to participate in this class as well as how many days per week you plan on attending, and it sets off a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget to stick to it. The visuals are very informative and really help you to understand the movement and positioning of each pose.

6. ShopWell
Price: Free
If food choice happens to be one of your issues, this app is the key to solving your dilemma. You search for (or barcode scan) the foods that you regularly eat and the app will tell you if this food is good for you, judging by data that you input in the beginning. It gives you a rating 1 (bad) to 100 (ideal). It doesn’t just give you a rating though, it tells you precisely why this food is good or bad for you. It gives you the nutrition breakdown, all of the ingredients and a suggestion of which similar foods would be a better choice for achieving your goals. I love this app! I make my shopping list then I sit for approximately 10 minutes and input each item and choose from the “better alternatives” to get the foods that are healthiest for me.

7. Lift
Price: Free
If you find that you often give up because you set a huge goal for yourself and it seems unattainable, please give this app a try. This program takes your long-term, high-reaching goal and breaks it into smaller, easier to achieve mini-goals. It encourages you to do these mini-projects frequently so that they become everyday habit. After you have completed several of these smaller tasks, the far-reaching goal doesn’t seem so difficult to grasp. This program is not only for weight loss, you can use it to re-train yourself to achieve several goals that will make you healthier and happier.

8. Jillian Michaels Slim-down Solutions
Price: Free
If you are looking for someone to tell you exactly what to do in order to lose the unwanted weight, this is the app for you. You are provided with recipes to set up meal plans to get your nutrition in order. This app also gives you specific work out instructions that are different from day to day to help work different areas of your body in order for you to achieve weight loss and muscle tone. You can talk to other members as well as get encouragement to keep up your good work.
9. Weight Loss by ModiFace
Price: Free with paid upgrade option
If you need visual encouragement, look no further than Weight Loss by ModiFace. You snap a picture of your face and input your current data, then you enter your desired weight and you are shown a side by side comparison of your picture now and what you will look like after you have dropped the weight. Nothing is more encouraging than seeing how great you will look once you reach your goal. You are then provided with your daily nutritional guidelines to achieve the new, slimmer you!
10. Nexercise
Price: Free
This is another one of the iPhone apps to help you lose weight that works based on a rewards system. All of your progress is logged in a social setting so you can get encouragement and advice from others in similar positions as yourself. You have daily goals that help you earn experience points (XP). You are offered rewards based upon your XP level. The rewards range from gift cards to be used at various retailers to sweepstakes entries for larger prizes. You use this app to track your exercise, heart rate, and food consumption and compete with friends and other members to see who can get the highest score. This app provides you with excellent social and reward based motivation to keep you striving for what you want.

All of these iPhone apps to help you lose weight will work with you no matter what level of experience you have. Many of them allow you to carry your own personal nutritionist and personal trainer in your pocket! What apps have you used to help you reach your weight loss goals?
